In today’s (chronological) Bible reading… Leviticus 15-18… we see the importance in the Old Testament of the Day of Atonement.
It was the Most Important Day. It was the day sins were atoned for. It was the only time the high priest was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies.
It pointed to the Most Important Person. Jesus is illustrated in the high priest. He did the work alone. He laid aside His garments of glory and sanctified Himself for us. The difference is that Jesus did not offer any sacrifices for Himself… because He is sinless. He, Himself, is the final, perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world.
It was for the Most important Reason. The high priest entered the Holy of Holies 3 times:
1) with the incense,
2) with the blood for his sins, and
3) with the blood for the sins of the people.
Atonement has always required blood. “Oh, the blood of Jesus… it washes white as snow.”
