In today’s (chronological) Bible reading… 2Kings 12,13; 2Chronicles 24… we see God’s faithfulness on display despite good kings and bad kings.
Joash did a lot of good things, but he was a follower. As long as godly Jehoiada was on the scene, the young king Joash obeyed the Lord…. and the people prospered. But, after the high priest died, the young king began to listen to other advisors… and he soon led the people into sin.
When you obey God’s Word, you do it regardless of what those around you do.
If you continue to follow others, and do good when they do good, you will develop no spiritual depth of your own… and your spiritual life will be gone will those godly people are gone.
Joash did not listen to the other prophets… and even killed one of them. As a result, God left the people to their own decisions; the army was defeated and the king was assassinated.
Henry Ford is quoted as saying, “My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.”
We all need that kind of friend. We all need to be that kind of friend.
