In today’s (chronological) Bible reading… Lamentations 3:37–5:22… we see the end of Jeremiah’s sad song. Jeremiah’s sadness was due to the sin and situation of God’s people.
Most of God’s people were sad because of the destruction of their buildings back home. Jeremiah’s sadness was due to the destruction of the people themselves. Sin had destroyed more than mere buildings and possessions.
In God’s sight, His people had been like precious gems; now they were cheap clay pots. The people had been used to the finest things of life; now they could not even find the necessities of life. Even the healthiest young men were like walking corpses who would have been better off dead.
Jeremiah saw a tragic life lesson first hand… If you want to cheapen yourself and others, sin will always help you do it.
