In today’s (chronological) Bible reading… Haggai 1,2… we are introduced to the prophet, Haggai. He writes a short book – of 4 sermons – that was an encouragement to God’s people.
In 538BC, about 50,000 Jews left Babylon and returned to their homeland in Judea to rebuild the temple and restore the nation. 2 years later, the laid the foundation of the temple, but the work was stopped… and did not resume for another 16 years. It was the preaching of God’s prophets, Haggai & Zechariah, that God the work started again.
Haggai’s 4 sermons could be entitled:
– Be Honest! (1:1-15)
– Be Strong! (2:1-9)
– Be Clean! (2:10-19)
– Be Encouraged! (2:20-23)
When God’s work is being neglected, God’s Word being preached by God’s man will get the work started again.
Francis de Sales said, “The test of a preacher is that his congregation goes away saying, not ‘What a lovely sermon!’ but ‘I will do something!'”
