In today’s (chronological) Bible reading… Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20,21… we follow Jesus from the cross through the resurrection to the ascension.
Once Jesus rose from the dead, He did not just hover over the earth like some mystical aura. He was still God, but was now in a glorified body… a body that had fresh scars on His hands, feet, and side. But, as God, He could appear and disappear in a flash.
We read of superheroes in the comic books. We watch superheroes in the blockbuster movies. And, we might be tempted to think of Jesus as just another superhero. But, Jesus was more than a superhero. Jesus was more than a mighty prophet. Jesus was more than a kind healer. Jesus is God! He actually defeated death and came back to life!!
Jesus showed up on several occasions in His glorified body… to His 11 remaining apostles, and to hundreds of others. He showed shocked individuals His nail-scarred hands and feet. He ate broiled fish before their amazed eyes. He calmed people with His reassuring voice and comforting presence.
Here we are… almost 2,000 years later. While we cannot reach out and touch His body ourselves, we, like the early disciples, are encouraged to believe His words and hold on to faith that Jesus is still alive and well!
