Baasha (“Baal Hears”) was the 3rd king of Israel, the N. KIngdom. He was the son of Ahijah, of the tribe of Issachar.
– Baasha vs Nadab, Israel’s 2nd king… 1Ki. 15:25-30
Nadab, Israel’s 2nd king, committed the same idolatrous sins Jeroboam (Israel’s 1st king) did. After 2years, Nadab was assassinated by Baasha, who was one of his military commanders. Baasha took the throne by plotting against – and killing – his own king!
See 1Ki. 14:7-11,14… A prophet named Ahijah had told Jeroboam that, because of his wickedness, all his male descendants would be killed and would be shamefully left unburied. When Baasha took the throne from Nadab, he carried out this terrible curse on Jeroboam’s family.
Baasha became king of Israel in the 3rd year of Asa, king of Judah.
– Baasha vs Asa, Judah’s 3rd King… 1Ki. 15:16-22,32-34
Over the course of his 23year reign, Baasha was at war with Asa, king of Judah. He allied Israel with Aram and endeavored to strangle Judah’s trade by fortifying Ramah, a city 5miles north of Jerusalem. King Asa of Judah then bribed King Ben-hadad of Syria to switch sides and attack Israel, prompting the loss of extensive territory in Dan & Naphtali, northwest of the Sea of Galilee. Baasha was forced to withdraw from Ramah.
– Baasha, Israel’s 3rd King… 1Ki. 16:1-7
Someone should have warned Baasha, king of Israel, that “what goes around, comes around”.
Apparently, Baasha didn’t get the point of Ahijah’s message. Rather than see God and His discipline behind the events that took place, Baasha lived in total disregard of God and His commands.
Baasha lived just as wickedly as Jeroboam had. Because of this, another prophet, Jehu, prophesied that the very same fate would befall Baasha’s family. This curse would be carried out by Israel’s next king, Zimri (1Ki. 16:10-13).
You’ve heard the saying, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
What happened to Baasha is EXACTLY what happened to Jeroboam; he had a front row seat to it all! Yet, he did not learn from it…
Are YOU learning from what is happening around you?
You can read Baasha’s story in 1Kings 15,16.
