Mary was a woman who was devoted to Jesus. When Jesus was in the area, Mary wanted to be where He was.
Mary was the sister of Martha & Lazarus; they lived together in Bethany, a village just outside of Jerusalem. Jesus stayed with them from time to time when he visited Jerusalem.
Once when Jesus was visiting, Martha was busy attending to all the preparations – and she became frustrated that Mary was choosing to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to Him rather than helping her with the work. Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help; instead, Jesus affirmed Mary’s choice to spend time with Him.
Another time, not long after Jesus raised Mary’s brother, Lazarus, from the dead, Mary’s deep love for Jesus was made obvious to all as she broke an alabaster jar of expensive perfume to pour over Jesus head and feet, and to wipe His feet with her hair. When Judas rebuked her for this “wasteful act”, Jesus instead praised her for her act of devotion.
When is the last time you lavished love on Jesus? Are you making the most of your time with Him? Or, do you continually choose the daily things of life over Him?
* People in love do lavish things for the people they love.
