GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME written in 1973
Lanny Wolfe (1942 – ) was born in Columbus, Ohio. He learned how to play the piano by ear, a talent that was used in his local church growing up. He went to Ohio State University and received his baccalaureate degree in Business Education, and began teaching public schools. Going to night school, he finished his MBA there as well.
Being a talented church musician, he was offered a job at a Pentecostal Bible school in California to teach worship music – which led him to return to a traditional learning atmosphere where he eventually received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from San Jose State University. He eventually finished a second Master’s in the same field.
He headed the music departments at several Bible schools affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church International. Since 1993, he has served as music director at a charismatic non-denominational church in Houston, as well as being a music instructor at South Texas Bible Institute. Lanny is presently serving as CEO for Paradigm Music Productions, writing, conducting choir clinics at churches across the country and accompanying members of the original Lanny Wolfe Trio for reunion concerts at selected churches and venues throughout the nation.
Lanny was driving through Nevada one day on his way to Montana, the kind of trip that gives plenty of time for thinking about and composing music. Lanny remembers that trip like this: “I was just riding in my car and I had a moment of truth of the Scripture that I had read all my life. It was just a realization of what that Scripture really meant.”
That Scripture was 1 John 4:4: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world.” As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, and the Holy Spirit gives us the confidence and courage we need to face any obstacle.
Read this hymn, and – today – walk in the confidence that comes with knowing Christ is with you.
Greater is He that is in me. Greater is He that is in me.
Greater is He that is in me… than he that is in the world.
Satan’s like a roaring lion, roaming to and fro
seeking whom he may devour; the Bible tells me so.
Many souls have been his prey to fall in some weak hour,
but God has promised us today His overcoming power. (CHORUS)
On the Day of Pentecost, a rushing mighty wind
blew into the upper room and baptized all of them
with a power greater than any earthly foe,
and I’m so glad I’ve got it, too. I’ll let the whole world know. (CHORUS)
