Matthew 24:44 (KJV)
Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
The Doomsday Clock is an internationally recognized design that suggests how close we are to destroying our civilization with dangerous technologies of our own making. First and foremost among these are nuclear weapons, but the dangers include climate-changing technologies, emerging biotechnologies, and cyber technology that could cause irreversible harm, whether by intention, miscalculation, or by accident, to our way of life and to the planet.
With the collapse of the Berlin Wall, scientists set back the hands of the so-called Doomsday Clock from near midnight to about 11:45 P.M. Before the fall of the wall, the clock had been set at almost midnight — the hour used by scientists to describe a catastrophe on the earth which will doom the human family to annihilation. The scientists move the clock upward or backward based upon their estimate of the danger created by events on the earth at any given moment in time. Following the 9-11 attack by terrorists, the Doomsday Clock was moved closer to midnight again. On Thursday, January 26, 2017, this group of scientists moved the clock closer to midnight… to 11:57-and-a-half minutes. Some are now saying that the last human being who will be alive on earth has already been born.
It is important that our world leaders should be mindful of rhetoric and policies that might increase the chances for nuclear war. It is also true that we should be good stewards of the earth God has given us and take good care of it. But this doomsday clock has become as politicized as the talks about our president’s rhetoric and the effect we can have on our climate have. This doomsday clock ignores the true signs of “end-times” as given in the Bible. This doomsday clock gives the impression that we will somehow dictate how long humanity and this planet will endure, apart from God’s will and plan.
No one knows the hour when humanity will face the greatest event in history — not nuclear annihilation or a terrorist nightmare, but the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Although the doomsday clock is set at 2-and-a-half minutes to midnight, God has not revealed the hour of His coming, nor the day that it will occur; but He has warned us in His Word to be ready for that critical day.
