This song was written and recorded by Rich Mullins… included on his album,
A Liturgy, a Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band.

Rich Mullins (October 21, 1955 – September 19, 1997) was an American Contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter. Some of his albums were considered among Christian music’s best. Mullins was devoted to the Christian faith and heavily influenced by St. Francis of Assisi.
In 1993, Mullins assembled a group of Nashville musicians (including Jimmy Abegg, Beaker, Billy Crockett, Phil Madeira, Rick Elias, and Aaron Smith) to form A Ragamuffin Band, whose name was inspired by the Christian book The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning.
In September 1997, Mullins and a friend were traveling through Illinois to a benefit concert at Wichita St. University in Kansas, when they lost control of their Jeep. They were not wearing seat belts and were both ejected from the vehicle. When a passing semi-trailer truck swerved to miss the overturned Jeep, Mullins, who was too injured to move out of the path of the oncoming truck, was hit by the truck and instantly died at the scene.

I first heard this song years after it was written… and it became a chorus regularly sung in churches.

This song harkens back to the early creeds written by the early church fathers. Those creeds served as concise, doctrinal statements that could be easily taught and learned by believers in Christ.
Bible Reference… Psalm 19:7,8; John 20:31; Colossians 2:2-4; 1Timothy 4:6,16;                                                2Timothy 2:2; 3:14-17; 4:3,4; Titus 1:9; 2:1; 1Peter 3:15,16

I believe in God the Father; Almighty Maker of Heaven and Maker of Earth…
and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord;
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate. He was crucified, and dead and buried.

        CHORUS:
        And I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am;
        I did not make it, no, it is making me…
        it is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man.

I believe that He who suffered was crucified, buried and dead;
He descended into Hell, and – on the third day – rose again.
He ascended into Heaven, where He sits at God’s mighty right hand.
I believe that He’s returning to judge the quick and the dead of the sons of men.
(CHORUS)
        TAG:
        I believe it! I believe it! I believe it! I believe it! I believe it!

I believe in God the Father; Almighty Maker of Heaven and Maker of Earth…
and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son our Lord.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, one Holy Church,
the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sin.
I believe in the resurrection. I believe in a life that never ends. (CHORUS)
