This song was written by Chris Rice , and was recorded by Kathy Troccoli… included on her album, Sounds Of Heaven.

Chris Rice is an American singer and songwriter who works in the Contemporary Christian music, Contemporary Folk and Adult Contemporary genres. He became a recording artist as well in 1996, after signing a contract with Rocketown Records.

Kathleen Troccoli (born June 24, 1958) is a Contemporary Christian music singer, songwriter, author, and speaker.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Troccoli was raised in a Catholic family that was not very observant. As of 1998, she was a practicing Roman Catholic. After graduating high school, Troccoli studied jazz and opera at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for a year, then returned to Long Island to major in voice at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). In the summer of 1978, while working a “day job” to help cover her college expenses, Troccoli formed a friendship with a born again Christian co-worker; this led to Troccoli herself becoming a devout Christian. Troccoli’s alto voice gained prominence when she opened for the a capella group, GLAD, when the group performed at the Long Island church Troccoli attended in 1980. About 6 months later, Nalle (leader of GLAD) invited Troccoli to record a demo tape, with his band’s backing, and Kathy accepted. After she and GLAD had recorded it, the tape was submitted to Michael Blanton and Dan Harrell (Amy Grant’s brother-in-law); these two, as a result of hearing it, formed the Reunion Records label, in Nashville, specifically to record Troccoli, and Kathy herself, in turn, moved to Nashville to reside with Harrell and his family. She became a prominent fixture in Contemporary Christian music.
In addition to her musical activities, Kathy wrote several Christian books. She also became a popular speaker, and musician, for Christian organizations and at well-known Christian events.

This song became a frequent song sung at missions events and evangelism conferences… and you’ll often hear it played as accompaniment to slide shows and videos after church mission trips.

This song reminds us that – as believers – we are a light… and we are to take that light to the world around us.
Bible Reference… Matthew 5:14-16; 28:18-20

There is a candle in every soul; some brightly burning, some dark and cold.
There is a Spirit who brings fire; ignites a candle and makes His home.

        1st CHORUS:
Carry your candle; run to the darkness.
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn.
Hold out your candle for all to see it.
Take your candle, and go light your world.
Take your candle, and go light your world.

Frustrated brother, see how he’s tried to light his own candle some other way.
See now your sister, she’s been robbed and lied to; still holds a candle without a flame.
(CHORUS)

We are a family whose hearts are blazing,
so let’s raise our candles and light up the sky.
Praying to our Father, in the name of Jesus, “Make us a beacon in darkest times.”

        2nd CHORUS:
Carry your candle; run to the darkness.
Seek out the helpless, deceived and poor.
Hold out your candle for all to see it.
Take your candle, and go light your world. (1st CHORUS)
