This song was written by Patrick Denis Andrew, Joel Hanson, and Mike Andrew;
it was recorded by PFR… included on their debut album, The Late Great PFR.
PFR is a Christian rock group from Minnesota, founded in 1989 as the Joel Hanson Band by Joel Hanson, who was a camp counselor at Camp Shamineau, a Christian youth camp in Minnesota. In 1991, the band, then known as Inside Out, was signed by Brown Bannister. After signing, band member Patrick Andrew suggested they change the name to “Pray for Rain” after a line from a poem. In 1992, the band released Pray for Rain. Shortly after releasing that first album, an existing band (an instrumental group who did soundtrack work) known as Pray for Rain threatened a lawsuit, leading the band to settle on the name PFR. That first album was reissued with a slightly modified cover to reflect the change.
Having changed musical direction with each album, PFR moved into an edgier, heavy sound for their fourth album. While the album was well-received, the band shortly afterward announced that they were splitting up. In 1997, The Late Great PFR was released, a greatest hits album.
I first heard this song on a compiulation CD for high school seniors… and really liked it.
This song reminds us that nothing means anything without Jesus.

Nothing I could say would matter anyway; just a vain display with me in the middle.
No more empty words will anymore be heard; all my rhymes and verbs mean very little.
Like whispers thrown against the wind… empty phrases caving in…
It doesn’t mean anything without You; just words that I say without You.
Without Your Spirit to sing of this change of the heart that You bring,
without You it doesn’t mean anything.
Nothing I’ll ever do could ever hold a candle to
the love displayed when You said You forgave me.
And what I know of love is that I’m not deserving of
One You call Your Son, once sent to save me.
Like love holding the hand of hate, You choose to love me anyway… (CHORUS)
It doesn’t mean anything without You; just a nice melody without You.
Without Your Spirit to sing of the hope and the joy that You bring,
without You it doesn’t mean anything. (CHORUS)
Anything… doesn’t mean anything.
