This song was written by Ryan Heath Balltzglier, Adam Kersh, Paul Taylor Smith, and Brandon Coker; it was first recorded by North Point Inside Out. Laura Story later recorded it on her album, Open Hands.

North Point InsideOut is an American contemporary worship music band from Alpharetta, Georgia. Their group formed at North Point Community Church in 1995, a non-denominational church established by Pastor Andy Stanley.

Laura Mixon Story Elvington (born c. September 5, 1978) is an American Contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter from Spartanburg, South Carolina.
She began her career in 1996 when she met Shane Williams, from the band Silers Bald, at Columbia International University. Williams asked Story to join the band and she became their bass player. Story released 4 independent albums with the band.
When the band was about to sign a deal with Essential Records, Story’s manager suggested she record a solo album. In 2002, Story left Silers Bald and began working on her first album which was released independently that same year. In 2004, the title track of that album was recorded by Chris Tomlin.
In 2005, Laura married Martin Elvington, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to become an associate worship leader at Perimeter Church.
The message of this song reminds us of the freedom and life we enjoy because of the sacrifice Christ made on the cross for us. Our life truly begins at the cross when we experience His grace washing over us.
Bible Reference… John 3:16; 14:6; Hebrews 9:12; 1John 2:2

Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin;
lost, without hope, with no place to begin.
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
when death was arrested and my life began.

Ash was redeemed only beauty remains.
My orphan heart was given a name.
My mourning grew quiet, my feet rose to dance
when death was arrested and my life began.

        Oh, Your grace, so free, washes over me.
        You have made me new, now life begins with You.
        It’s Your endless love pouring down on us;
        You have made us new, now life begins with You.

Released from my chains, I’m a prisoner no more;
my shame was a ransom He faithfully bore.
He cancelled my debt and He called me His friend,
when death was arrested and my life began. (CHORUS)

Our Savior displayed on a criminal’s cross;
darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost.
But, then, Jesus arose with our freedom in hand;
that’s when death was arrested and my life began. (CHORUS)

        Oh, we’re free! Free! Forever we’re free!
        Come join the song of all the redeemed!
        Yes, we’re free! Free! Forever, amen!
        When death was arrested and my life began… (Repeat CODA)
